Sustainability at Spier

Spier have focused their efforts on the future of the planet as well as the local community. By supporting local trade, money is kept in the community thereby creating a healthy environment for Spier and it's surrounds to flourish.

Spier will always first buy South African before going beyond the borders to source materials. But even when going local, Spier will always try and source from suppliers within a 5 to 10 kilometre radius (3.10 to 6.21 miles). A craftsman and a small team are now based on site at Spier, recycling paper and turning it into usable products including name badges used at Spier conferences. Toilet paper is made from sugar cane reeds, naturally bleached and no chemicals are used during the manufacturing process.

A 20 litre mineral water dispenser is available at the back of the Cape Winelands conference centre for delegates to refill their bottles instead of taking new plastic bottles. All bottles are recycled, but this still requires energy, whereas refilling a bottle is much more energy efficient.

Goals for the future of Spier include carbon neutrality, a zero waste environment and eradication of poverty by creating 400 jobs through their social and environmental programs.
